I have installed aicontactsafe 2.0.16beta15

I have also installed captcha plugins as referred to in one of the threads on this forum. The plugin has been enabled.

When I select captcha as "aicontactsafe native" - the captcha is displayed

When I select captcha as "Multiple captcha plugin" - the captcha is not displayed. However if the form is filled up and user tries to submit - the submit fails since internally the captcha has been calculated and the system is expecting the captcha values to be typed in (but since it is not displayed - there is no where to type it in).

I am running Joomla 1.7

I am using firefox browser.

The developer of that plugin modified it in such a way that is not backward compatible.
Sorry, for now I've decided to discontinue support for it. Each time he is making a change I have to rewrite the code for aiContactSafe and it's becoming annoying.
I'm guessing he doesn't like his extension being used by other developers.

Would you have any plans of providing a stronger captcha in the native interface itself? If so, when is that likely to be available?

What do you mean by a stranger CAPTCHA ?
The native one in aiContactSafe is similar with the one Google uses ( try register a gmail account ).
The ones in the "Multiple captcha plugin" are not stronger. Just different.

I was referring to multiple options for captcha - letters, numbers, maths and randomizing amongst the options. My frame of reference is phoca guestbook - it offers a wider variety of options for the captcha.

As I said, that doesn't make it stronger, just different.
It's harder to use OCR on a random deformed text then on normal text but with more variate chars.
I've investigated this a long time and this is the strongest solution.
Notice how many big companies are using it, including developers that offer external CAPTHA systems. Then compare it with how many are using math CAPTHCA or similar solutions.

I understand some users want variety and that is why I've implemented that plugin.
Will try to add more CAPTCHA solutions in the future releases but can't tell you when. Sorry.
